santa's in the poor house

So I know that we aren't even past Halloween yet but if the stores can start whipping out their Christmas stuff I guess I can start blogging about it. So Dustin and I talked last budgeting session about Christmas and what we are going to do this year. As many of you know our move here to Portland wasn't exactly for the financial increase. And honestly the reasons we moved here are MUCH more important in the long run, and there is definately potential here for financial gain, but in the mean time, I can't say it has been easy on any of us, and yes mostly harder on me who loves to shop. So we were trying to figure out how we were going to afford Christmas this year and we decided that I would try to save as much as I can from my grocery budget every two weeks and try to buy a present or two with it. This way we aren't taking it from any other place it just puts all the pressure on me to try and be EXTREMELY frugal! But hopefully by the time Christmas shopping time REALLY comes around everyone will have a few present to start from. I know there are those out there that are really on top of things and they are saving all year a little at a time and if I was organized at all I probably should have done the same but this is me we are talking about. It is just hard as the kids get older I feel like Christmas is getting more and more expensive. There was a time when I could get away with merely going to the dollar store and buying a bunch of things and wrapping them up and calling it good. Now, unfortunately Maddy is asking for an ipod and a cell phone(which she WILL NOT be getting)! Anyway I have been thinking about how to prepare my kids that Christmas isn't going to be like it has been the last couple of years. SO I was thinking about showing them this picture and trying to convince them that this really is the real Santa Claus. What do you think?

Um, what is the liquid in Santa's plastic bottle?
Anywho, on Christmas---don't even get me started. I am the biggest procrastinator when it comes to gifts and I'm usually shopping the days before Christmas, mostly because I am waiting for a paycheck. We've never been budgeters (which is terrible) and this year I'm even more afraid of what the holidays will be like because I will be in postpartum mode with severe sleep deprivation!

Alot of my friends this year are doing the home made gift, nothing store bought except one or two from Santa- that would not include ipods or cell phones! I know the feeling of money though- we were doing ok, until the house took 6 months to sell- double house payments suck! But we are trying to buy a little at a time also- I have about 15 gifts hidden in my closet- good deals on things I can't pass up and then I make myself put them away instead of giving it to them right a way. We have an account set up in a different bank then we do all our other banking at- and we only have checks to it- it makes the temptation less since it's more of a hassle to use. I'll quit taking up the whole comment section- but this really helped cut my shopping, I wish I could actually only do the home made gifts- I just don't have that much dicilpine and creativity!

Love the picture. Don't you hate dealing with money (or the lack of it?) Good luck!

We suck at saving for Christmas too. I wish I was one of those who saved all year for the Holidays. It would be so much funner to shop. I am with you on the poor house thing. We are trying to catch up after 9 months of two house payments Ugggg!!!!
